CALCULATORS AND TOOLS

Following calculators and tools come with the Acoustic Analysis module:

Pressure loss calculator

The total mean pressure loss in engine intake and exhaust systems has adverse effects on engine performance and the allowable pressure loss is often specified as a companion target in acoustic design specifications of mufflers and silencers.  ADEM computes the pressure losses in the elements and, hence, the total back-pressure, of intake and exhaust systems automatically along with the acoustic calculations. Additionally, this calculator can be used for quick estimation of the pressure losses manually.

Temperature drop calculator

This calculator computes the mean temperature drop along the length of a pipe. There is assumed to be free convection and radiation on the outside surface and forced convection on the inside surface.   Given the mean temperature at the hot end and the gas mass flow rate, the temperature distribution along the system can be estimated quickly by using this calculator. The knowledge of the temperature gradient in an exhaust system is important, since the speed of sound depends strongly on the local mean temperature.

Porosity calculator

The open area porosity is an important parameter determining the acoustic behavior of perforated pipes and baffles, which are widely used in mufflers and silencers.  This calculator can be used for quick porosity calculations.

End-correction calculator

Acoustic calculations based on plane wave (1-D) models are sometimes refined by applying some heuristic end-corrections at sudden area discontinuities.  This calculator can be used to calculate the end-corrections for some common geometry.

Loudspeaker source tool

The loudspeaker is modeled, using its electro-mechanical properties, as a Spectral source.

Engine port flow calculator

This calculator computes the acoustic source characteristics of intake and exhaust processes in fluid machinery.  The properties of the fluid flow at the ports during the gas exchange periods are required for the calculations.  This data can be generated by most of the commercial engine gas dynamics software.

Equivalent source calculator

This calculator reduces multiple one-port acoustic sources to an equivalent single one-port source at given source plane.

Scientific calculator

This is a versatile calculator which can execute arithmetic expressions and functions.

Plotter tool

ADEM outputs on-line the most common parameters used in acoustic analysis of mufflers and flow ducts. Additional plots can be produced by using this tool. Both, functions of several variables and multi-column tables of data can be plotted, provided that these are available as defined entities in ADEM environment.
